Black-Owned Banks With Free Checking and No Monthly Fees

The fee arrived on a Tuesday, as fees do: $12 for "monthly maintenance," on an account that held $400. Twelve dollars a month is $144 a year for the privilege of lending your money to a bank. If you are shopping for Black-owned banks with free checking and no monthly fees, the good news is that several of them exist, with real account names and real terms you can check today.

Black-owned banks with free checking and no monthly fees: the actual accounts

Not a vague "many banks offer options." These are the named accounts, with the terms as published:

OneUnited Bank: Black Wall Street Checking

The country's largest Black-owned bank, founded in 1968 and headquartered in Boston, charges no monthly fees and requires no minimum balance on its accounts. You can open online from anywhere in the US. The account includes early direct deposit, an AutoSave program that rounds your debit purchases into savings, and a national surcharge-free ATM network. OneUnited also offers a Second Chance checking account for people rebuilding their banking history.

Carver Federal Savings Bank: Community Free Checking

Carver Federal, the Harlem-based bank that has served its community for generations, offers a Community Free Checking account with no monthly fee and a low opening deposit requirement. It comes with a Visa debit card. The tradeoff is footprint: branches are concentrated in the New York City area, so this one fits best if you live nearby.

Harbor Bank of Maryland: No Hassle Checking

Harbor Bank's No Hassle Checking has no minimum opening deposit and no monthly fees. One thing to know before you sign up: there is no free overdraft protection, though you can apply for an overdraft line of credit. If you occasionally cut your balance close, that detail matters more than the lack of a monthly fee.

Hope Credit Union: Rewards Checking

Hope is a Black-led credit union serving the Deep South, with 23 branches across Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Its Rewards checking carries no monthly fees, no minimum balance, and no minimum opening deposit, plus up to $20 a month in ATM fee refunds. Hit the monthly qualifications (debit card usage, a digital banking login, e-statements, and a direct deposit or automatic payment) and it pays 5.12% APY on balances up to $10,000. As a credit union, deposits are insured through the NCUA rather than the FDIC, same $250,000 limit.

What "free" still costs: the fine print checklist

Free checking means no monthly maintenance fee. It does not mean no fees at all. Before you commit to any account, check these four, because this is where free accounts differ most:

Why the fees are lower at these banks

This is not charity. Most of these institutions are Community Development Financial Institutions, and their business model depends on deposits staying in the community they serve. A 2019 FDIC study found that mission-driven banks, which include Black-owned minority depository institutions, originate a substantially higher share of their mortgages and small business loans in low- to moderate-income neighborhoods than other banks. Lower fees are part of how they keep depositors. Your balance becomes somebody's business loan, and the bank prices the account to keep you.

Is my money safe? Yes. Deposits at FDIC-insured Black-owned banks are protected up to $250,000 per depositor, per institution, exactly like deposits at any major bank. Insurance does not care who owns the bank.

One practical note: if you want to switch, do not close the old account first. Move your direct deposit, move your bills one by one, leave a cushion for a full billing cycle, then close. The full walkthrough is in our guide to opening an account at a Black-owned bank online.
